Call me Rickey, says Dallas City Council member Rick Callahan ...

The Dallas City Council has six new members, and seven new names.

Rick Callahan, who has represented Pleasant Grove since 2013, is now officially “Rickey.” The city’s website (screen grab above) has been updated to reflect the change, as has the City Hall directory of council members’ offices, and the nameplate in front of Callahan’s seat at the council horseshoe.

There’s a simple explanation, Callahan tells the Dallas Observer. Rickey is his real name. Always has been. It’s what his friends call him — that, or “R.D.” (Texas drivers’ license records identify him as “Rickey Don Callahan.”)

When he first decided to run for City Council, he said, he went with Rick because it’s shorter and easier. And when the folks at City Hall made up placards, business cards and so forth using that variant, he was fine with it. “I was busy,” he told the Observer. “I said, ‘I don’t care, use Rick’.”

After winning re-election this spring, the 59-year-old real estate broker decided to retore his -ey. “I didn’t realize it would cause such a big deal,” he said.

It hasn’t.

But it did make me wonder: By any chance, does the mayor have any friends who call him “Mikey”?

Scotty, get back to us on that, OK?
