KPOP being officially named one of the music genres in Youtube, first KPOP concert (SMTown Live World Tour) taking place at New York's Madison Square Garden, huge international recognition and awareness, and over millions of Youtube views are just many of the few important milestones that happened to Korean pop ever since my following 3 years ago. Throughout these almost-3 years since I saw my first KPOP music video by Girls' Generation's "Oh!" , it's been an interesting ride indeed.
With KPOP music transforming and increasing so rapidly, so have the quality and production of KPOP music videos. Not only have they become more flavourful and entertaining, many have sprung out being more bizzare than ever. Let me present my selection of the 10 MOST BIZZARE KPOP music videos of all time. Disclaimer: "bizzare" can entail the music, lyrics, dance, outfits, props, setting, videography, production and editing of the video.
10th Place: You & I (IU)
What is more bizarre than seeing IU with a cute goose in a warped time machine and an unconscious young man?
9th Place: Lovey Dovey – Zombie Ver. (T-ARA)
To the director of this music video: zombies in a dancing club with the video released in January? Really?
8th place: She's Gone (G-Dragon of BIGBANG)
A stalking killer chasing after a slowpoke pretty woman and then stabbing her with blood covered all over his face in a dark castle hallway. Enough said.
7th Place: 6th Sense (Brown Eyed Girls)
Meant for deep eyes, this music video touches on topics such as "media, paparazzi, women rights', sex and power" with 4 women fighting a whole troop of army…in the rain. How romantic.
6th Place: Midnight Circus (Sunny Hill)
Acid Jazz dance song paired with some synthesizer with a twist of circus charms and scenary. Nothing scares your right away but it captivates you the more you see it. Great props, good stage design and money-hefty sets.
5th Place: I'm the Best (2NE1)
Over 43 million views on this heavy 2NE1 blockbuster. Wild silver black outfits, awards-smashing, and missiles shooting plastic walls. The strong interweaving bass backdrop adds the "bizzareness" to this music video. This was a hard decision between their other hit song: "Ugly"
4th Place: Tallentangra (Xia Junsu)
Xia Junsu is one sexy man for his age representing from the disbanded trio: JYJ. He had at least 9 outrageous outfits for this music video accompanied with burning flames, non-Asian dancers and heavy heavy facial makeup and a super intricate dance routine all packed in 4 minutes and 35 seconds.
3rd Place: Monster (BIGBANG)
Fresh off the press is this Holly-wood esque produced music video of the top boy band in Korea. The 5 members transform into viscious and cynical monsters in a cold, frosted army battlefield. If you don't call this bizarre with their hairstyles and outfits, I don't know what to say. Did you see GD's "Edna" haircut and Taeyang's "Lady Gaga" hair change from his never-changing faux hawk style?
2nd Place: Mama (EXO)
SM Entertainment must have spent a ton-load of money on this much anticipated debut album for their new boy group EXO. Many KPOP followers were no doubt mind-blown from all the teasers (rather mind-bored) but surely this music video had all sorts of crazy stuff going on: 12 moons landed on Earth with superpowers like teleporting, water bending, fire throwing and some punk rock shouting for all the EXOtics.
1st Place: Fantastic Baby (BIGBANG)
Hands down this music video is the craziest, most bizzare and most entertainin KPOP music videos I've ever seen. Every second captivated your attention to it, making the rather cool electronic pop much more crazier. Here is why: super long orange GD hair, a freezing frosted Taeyang, a tatooed naked monk, Holographic helmet, chained Daesung, green TOP eyebrows, leopard print GD lips, and some BOOM SHAKA LAKA going on.
