Metallica frontman James Hetfield tells Detroit’s WRIF 101.1 FM that the 2013 version of the band’s Orion Music + More festival will be “edgy.”
“Our mission is to get some edgy music in front of our family,” says Hetfield in an new interview with WRIF host Meltdown. “After 30 years, Metallica’s got a dedicated and beautiful bunch of folks that follow us around. A lot of young metal bands, young alt bands, young …whatever…rock kinda bands…we wanna get them up in front of people. This is what we’re trying do is help spread the word of kinda edgy music. Lots of different stuff represented here on the lineup.”
Joining Metallica for the second annual Orion festival, which will take place this year at Belle Isle in Detroit on June 8-9, will be more than 30 other acts, include the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rise Against, Deftones, Silversun Pickups, Bassnectar, Gogol Bordello, Foals, Tomahawk, The Joy Formidable, The Bronx, Dropkick Murphys and more.
Last year’s inaugural Orion event was held in Atlantic City; Metallica plans to host the weekend in Detroit for the next 3 years.
“We’re excited to come there,” adds Hetfield. “Moving it into the Midwest where we’ve got a huge stronghold of Metallifreaks.”
