Are the studios flogging a dead horse with the die hard franchise? Is Bruce Willis becoming too old for this sort of film? And do we want to see more?
The fifth installment of the Die Hard franchise is finally here, with even bigger explosions, more stunts and it’s based in Russia?
Russia I hear you say, well yes, John McClain’s (Bruce Willis) son, Jack McClain (Jai Courtney) is imprisoned in Russia and John goes over to be with his son, although they aren’t the closest father and son, little does John know that his son is there on purpose to rescue a prisoner that holds vital information about the Russian president.
I have to say some of the explosions are brilliant, and I’ve not seen as many cars destroyed in a film since the first G.I. Joe. However, it’s not the best film by far, there is a bit of comedy in the film, with certainly some good McClain lines, but some of the stunts are too staged, for example, John drives his car off a the side of a bridge, but weirdly, all the lorries under the bridge are just parked up in order for him to drive down. I’m not a big fan of this sort of stunt and would have much rather seen a jump or something.
There’s a good twist in the story in which I am not going to tell you about, but if you just want a bit of escapism and see a load of explosions, then why not. It’s not even on par with the original Die Hard film, and to be honest I think they should have stopped at number 3, it’s worth a watch if nothing else is on, but like Warm Bodies, don’t expect to be blown away by this, apart from some good explosions from time to time.
